Why you should read?
Most of our mental development and study discipline comes through formal education. But
as soon as we leave the external discipline of school, many of us let our minds atrophy. We
don’t do any more serious reading, we don’t explore new subjects in any real depth outside
our action fields, and we don’t think analytically, we don’t write _ at least not critically or in
a way that tests our ability to express ourselves in distilled, clear and concise language.
Instead, we spend our time watching TV.
Yes! TV can enrich our lives and contribute meaningfully to our purposes and goals. But
there are many programs that simply waste our time and minds and many that influence us
in negative ways if we let them. Like the body, television is a good servant but a poor
master.
There’s no better way to inform and expand your mind on a regular basis than to get into
the habit of reading good literature. You can get into the best minds that are now or that
have ever been in the world. I highly recommend starting with a goal of a book a month,
then a book every two weeks, then a book a week. The person who doesn’t read is no better
off than the person who can’t read.
Quality literature, such as the Great Books, books about leadership, personal effectiveness
and excellence and other publications that expand our cultural awareness and current
literature in various fields can expand our paradigms and sharpen our mental saw.
How can you read effectively?
We normally spend ninety minutes of our time watching football match which does not add
any value to our life.
Most of the movies that we watch are just waste of time and bring about mental
dysfunctions.
Most of our time that we spend on the internet does not add any value to our career of
profession.
There’s no other way you could spend an hour that begin to compare with reading books
about personal effectiveness and excellence and leadership in terms of value and results. It
will affect every decision, every relationship. It will greatly improve the quality, the
effectiveness of every other hour of the day, including the depth and restfulness of your
sleep. It will build the long term physical, spiritual and mental strength to enable you to
handle difficult challenges in life.
For instance, if you read an hour every day, you can read a whole book every month. So you
will read 12 wonderful books within a year.
Also, there are 66 books in the Bible. Reading 2 books every week, less than 9 months you
will complete reading the entire Bible. Therefore, I am challenging you to read an hour every day. Just an hour! Before you go to work, schedule your time in such a way that you will get a bonus hour for reading. And if you discipline yourself enough to keep to it, there is going to be a tremendous positive changes
in your life.
So if you cultivate the habit of reading to broaden your horizon, and improve on the way
you think and your personal effectiveness and excellence, it will have impact on your
children and your children children. What am I trying to tell you? I am telling you that
reading is a long term investment that needs attention in your life now! So that your next
generations will not suffer the consequences thereof.
Please I want you to agree with me because you are meant to be a solution to your
environment, not a problem.
You are meant to be a success, and one of the greatest way to accomplish that is by reading
and reading good books to stir up and develop your God given talents. Reading alone is not
a guarantee, but it will serve as a leverage.
Mark Twain ones said "twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things
that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from
the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
Peter Druker also said "the best way to predict the future is to create it."
Please I will end here. But start your success journey... with reading!!!!
